Obama’s undeniable intelligence and oratorical gifts have led many of us (myself included) to get perhaps a little too confident in him. Of course, I don’t think anyone who's been awake for the past eight years would dare suggest that that he’s a shoo-in for the White House, but as decent and intelligent human beings we tend to believe that rationality and morality will prevail. But then we remember that we live in the most retarded civilization on earth, and we recall how gullible and malleable the electorate is -- how susceptible they are to the lies of the Rethug smear machine. Make no mistake, should Obama emerge as the nominee, he will be subjected to the nastiest campaign in American history. The most brutal and (sadly) effective Rovian psy-ops we’ve ever witnessed will be employed with no expense spared. I’m really sorry to say that I don’t believe Obama and his people will be talented and effective enough to withstand the offensive. They haven’t shown me that they’re ready for a bloody street fight with the nastiest motherfuckers on the block. In fact, they’ve shown just the opposite. For all of his gifts, Obama is very much a product of the mainstream Democratic Party, the weakest, most pathetic and clueless collection of losers in political history. Obama is good, but he’ll have to be a miracle worker to prevail, and I think he’s probably about thirty percent better than Kerry was. That ain’t gonna cut it.

Hey, Lisa, this Daily Kos post makes a similar point to the one you made the other day.

I listened to part of Obama’s speech on race this morning. The portion I heard was excellent, but it was odd hearing such a socially and intellectually charged speech in the America of today. Most voters could give a shit, as they’ve all been conditioned to be good consumerist drones and nothing more. There is no substantial or consequential intellectual ferment in this country. Tragically, Obama’s like Kennedy in a Best Buy store.

You know, Saint McCain (aka Huggy Bear) is a physically repulsive man. I try to steer clear of cracking on personal appearances, as I’d rather focus my critique on actions, policy decisions, etc., but the dude literally spoiled my appetite this morning, and half a bowl of Lucky Charms went to waste. Seriously.

Speaking only for myself (but maybe some of you can relate), the era of BushCo represents more of moral and intellectual offense than a direct material injury. In other words, for all the damage these fascists have inflicted, I have been relatively unscathed financially or physically. I’m not patrolling the streets of Baghdad for Halliburton, or being ethnically cleansed out of New Orleans. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Nevertheless, something that infuriates and terrifies me to no end is the gutting of our institutions of public safety that these fucks have successfully carried out, and which represents a growing and unforgivable threat to all of us who haven’t already been hurt or killed by this rape.

Driving home tonight, I heard a news report about how, some time ago, a bunch of Southwest Airlines planes were determined unsafe, but because the BushCo FAA didn’t follow through on grounding these planes, and (surprise) because Southwest chose profit over safety, these deathships are still in operation. I don’t know about you, but I fly Southwest a least a couple times a year, and thanks to the "magic" of self-policing industry and an FAA staffed with incompetent BushCo cronies and ideologues, my chances of dying a fiery death are greater than ever -- as are my chances of ingesting poisoned water or tainted meat, or being crushed by a decaying and defective bridge, or suffering any number of public safety atrocities delivered by these fanatical deregulationists, who are hell bent on privatizing the public realm so they can further enrich themsleves and their friends.

So the next time my moderately liberal coworker looks at me like I’m batshit crazy when I say Republicanism is rotten to the core and there are no good Republicans, I might just have to slap him in the nuts.
